PARTY GOER

This is definitely my preferred way to attend a party, but it still doesn’t mean everything is easy breezy.  Here are some approaches to consider when partying with your health in mind…
  1. Plan for the party.  This means actually adjusting for the atypical eating experience up ahead.  Whether is means making a deal with yourself not to eat out before or after, or having a small snack prior to partying, make sure you have a realistic plan in place.
  2. Stick to your regular eating routine.  Do NOT, repeat do NOT, try to skip meals or having something “really light” in order to save up for the feast later.  This will likely backfire on your 10-fold.
  3. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.  You want to be well-hydrated entering and leaving the party.  Drink plenty of water prior to the party and while there keep a drink on hand so you don’t end up feeding your thirst with food.  If you’re imbibing, aim to switch between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks so you don’t end up with a hangy.
  4. Survey the spread.  Take a quick peek at what all is (or isn’t) available so you can make a more informed decision on how you want to build you party plate.  Ideally, you’d fill half your plate with whatever fruits and veggies you can grab to help fill you up.
  5. Eat only what you love, leave what you like. Instead of piling your plate a mile high with things that don’t really tantalize your taste buds (beanie weenies, we're looking at you!), pick only the foods that give you true enjoyment. If something doesn’t give you heart eyes, don’t eat it.

PARTY PLANNER

Throwing a shindig has a lot of moving parts, but be extra nice to you and your guests by implementing these healthy party planning tips…
  1. Serve on smaller plates.  Nine-inch (or less) disposable plates are perfect for party goers and watching portion sizes!
  2. Use healthier substitutions in dishes. Check out our 10 Substitutions You Can Try Today to get you started.
  3. Don’t skimp on the fruits and veggies.  Whether you stick with a simple veggie tray or offer a fresh fruit-based dessert as something sweet, you can feel good about serving your guests something good for them.
  4. Offer other activities at your party.  Even though we all look forward to the food, consider having some other fun things to engage in like designated dance floor area or play a game like “Heads Up!”.

At the end of the day guys, just remember that there is no meal that can undo ALL your healthy habits.  The most important thing is to get back to them at the very next opportunity!
