THE BEST MEALS FOR A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP

4/25/2017

You know those days (sometimes weeks) when you feel like a true life walking zombie?  (The slow kind, not the freakish fast ones.)  Well whether we realize it or not, food can be an instrumental part of our sleep habits.

So in honor of Sleep Awareness Week (which is April 23rd through April 29th this year), I am sharing the best meals to promote a good night’s sleep.

Why is this so important?  Because a lack of sleep can lead to a false feeling of hunger and overeating.  And no matter our health goal, I’d say it’s safe to say that’s no bueno.

So what makes up a magical sleep-inducing meal?  A combination of…
  • Complex carbohydrates (such as beans, starchy vegetables, whole grain foods) - Not only does essential energy come from complex carbohydrates, but they can help boost serotonin levels.
  • Tryptophan-rich foods - Are high in the amino acid which can also boost serotonin levels and include…
    • Lean protein (such as chicken, turkey and low-fat dairy)
    • Bananas
    • Eggs
  • Nuts - Their heart-healthy fats can also boost your serotonin levels.
  • Fish (especially salmon and tuna) - Help the body produce melatonin thanks to their B6.

Try these delicious dishes…

  1. Easy Almond Crusted Salmon Sticks (from Wishful Chef) with Garlic Roasted Root Vegetable Fries (from The Real Food RDs)
  2. Spinach Lasagna Roll-Ups (from The Kitchn) with whole wheat lasagna noodles and an Apple Cranberry Pecan Salad (from Tastes Better from Scratch)
  3. Easy Sweet Potato Black Bean Burrito Bowls (from Chelsea’s Messy Apron)
  4. Or have breakfast for dinner with these 3-Ingredient Cottage Cheese Pancakes (from Hurry the Food Up) with sliced bananas and your favorite eggs!

Happy slumbering!
