Happy Wednesday! Fourth of July is next Monday. I hope all of you out there celebrate this American holiday relaxing, eating good food, and hanging out with your favorite people.

Typically, this holiday is spent outside around the grill with a cold cocktail in hand. Try this refreshing, fruit cocktail this year. This cocktail is fruit and liquor only. No added sweeteners or mixers. For an added bonus, watermelon is packed with vitamins such as A & C and has a high water content so it is a refreshing way to stay cool in the hot sun. Plus, the beautiful colors are perfect for an Independence day party: Red (Watermelon & Strawberries), White (Tequila) and Blue (Blueberry ice cubes) !

WATERMELON STRAWBERRY 'RITA

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1 small watermelon
  • 12-15 strawberries
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • 100% agave silver/blanco Tequila (vodka would also be delicious here)
  • Flavored Ice cubes (see below)
DIRECTIONS:
  1. Cut Watermelon.  (Hate cutting watermelon, check out this post for a way for making this process easier.)
  2. Add watermelon and strawberries to the blender and blend until liquidified.
  3. Add juice to cut through the sweetness
  4. Put flavored ice cubes into a glass, add 1 shot (1.5 oz) of tequila and fill with watermelon mixture
  5. Enjoy!

*Notes:
  • This also makes a delicious mocktail. Simply eliminate the liquor and serve the watermelon-strawberry juice over ice.
  • Prefer a frozen margarita? Use frozen strawberries instead of fresh for a frozen version. .

Want to keep your drink ice cold without diluting? Make flavored ice cubes!
In an ice cube tray, place 4-5 blueberries and fill the tray with any citrus juice (lemon, lime, or orange), coconut water or  plain  filtered water.

Even though this cocktail may quench your thirst. Remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Check out our hydration post for more tips.
I hope you enjoy this beverage over the holiday weekend! Not hosting? Blend up a batch, pour into a large mason jar and take with you. Before serving, shake it up in the jar and serve over ice and tequila.
